So what is "Verdaccio"?
Records show that the verdaccio underpainting was first used for tempera paintings to create the effect of the shadows of flesh, which have a greenish quality, and was later used in oil paintings. The green hue offsets the reds creating a more natural looking skin tone.
Step-by-Step you will learn a system and be able to replicate the results on your own after the workshop.
- Using a Grid to get excellent proportions.
- Contour Drawing from photo reference.
- Mixing varied values (darks and lights) of green for the Verdaccio Underpainting.
- Mixing color glazes used over the underpainting for life-like skin and enhanced depth illusion.
- Controlling your paint application & adding beautiful detail.
- Reference Photo provided.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
It is believed that "verdaccio" (Italian for the word green), may have started as a way of conserving pigments left over from painting sessions. They were used in the bottom layers or "underpaintings" of a new composition. These layers usually show through the upper layers of paint.
Remember that paint was ground by hand, often from colored minerals (rocks) and occasional plant material. Then it was hand mulled (hand mixed) with oil, which was labor and time intensive. At the end of the day, an artist may have mixed all the colors of paint left on his palette which creates a grayish-green color. That paint could be used to create a monochromatic or tonal rendering when starting a new painting.
Ancient Verdaccio recipes vary, but generally include: Ivory Black, Yellow Ochre, and White. My modern day take is to use Ivory Black, Titanium White, and Terra Verde (Green Earth). References: Wikipedia
